A2 Music Video Secondary Research – Music video director

Music videos represent a vital sector within the music industry. Music videos have become a venue where music artists are often promoted and given a chance to impress the public; not just vocally, but also with their visual abilities such as their signature moves. Today, music videos are considered as important as the song itself. There are artists and songs that have become so popular and well known because of their music videos. Although there are many people who think that the song is only secondary to the music video, the music video will only be a tool for the business and will be used to sell the song of the artist.

I shall analyse the music video ‘Scream’ which was a collaboration between the pop superstar siblings Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson and also ‘Bedtime Story’ by the legend herself, Madonna; both videos directed by Mark Romanek.
After a few years writing screenplays, Romanek decided to focus on music videos and signed on with Satellite Films. His subsequent work has come to be regarded as among the best of the medium. He has worked with many top-selling recording artists from Jay Z to Bono and also from different genres of popular music.

First I will critique he 4:46 minute music video for "Scream" which was directed by Mark Romanek; with the production being designed by Tom Foden. Michael Jackson did not create the "concept" for the video, which he had often done in the past, but left it to the wise hands of Romanek. The song and its accompanying video are a response to the backlash Jackson received from the media in 1993 regarding him as a child molester. The acclaimed video was shot primarily in black and white, at a cost of $7 million.

The concept of the video is based upon Michael and Janet on a large spacecraft, in hope of getting away from planet Earth. This represents the harassment that Michael Jackson was going through previous to the release of the video

I do believe that there are auteurs, in the sense that there are filmmakers with very strong voices and their voices are communicated on to the screen without a lot of compromise. When you look at a Kubrick or a Scorsese or a Jean Luc Goddard film, it is obvious that they are the auteur of that language and tone. However, I think those guys would have to admit that it is a massively collaborative process. In some instances, I would say the writer does deserve equal billing with the director. In other instances the director -- especially if he wrote part of the script himself -- is clearly more the author of the movie. -- on if screenwriters should receive equal credit to directors
